A West Coast return Carlos Alvarez, M.D., general surgeon Carlos Alvarez is glad to be back in California. After he completed his residency at UCLA Medical Center in 1995, he and his wife wanted to stay in the state. “It was a great training experience,” he says. “We had two VA hospitals and a county hospital in addition to the university medical center. We did hundreds of operations that other people see once or twice.” Unfortunately, there were no openings at the time. So he and his wife (whom he met at UCLA) moved back East. He took a faculty position at the University of Maryland, which he enjoyed because he was able to conduct research. He also practiced medicine in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. But when California called, Dr. Alvarez answered. He had visited Yosemite several times during his residency. That and the fact that he already knew another Sonora surgeon from UCLA helped make it an easy decision. “Adventist Health Sonora is a well-run hospital, and this is a lovely community,” he says. Some of his favorite things are watching soccer (especially Barcelona), hiking and road cycling. “But I may have to take up mountain biking,” he adds.
